In our production we have used a montage of shots as our opening.
We have filmed a range of natural scenes to use in our montage as i feel these link with our production because the feel of our music video is very natural and calm.

I have used the film Freaky Friday as inspiration. At the begining 50 seconds of this film there is a montage of pictures which is accompanied by music.

I have pasted this link to a youtube video of this.
I've also taken some print screens of these shots.

First cut feedback from Mrs Allison

Emily, Megan, Sam first cut feedback

Feedback from Mrs Allison on the first cut of your music video

• There is a clear sense of style in your countryside shots
• You have created quite a magical effect – reminds me of Pans Labyrinth (check this out)
• At the moment your train sequence doesn’t seem to fit with the overall style – if you return to this location it may help at the moment it doesn’t link to the subject
• Have you increased speed at the start? Is this necessary?
• Love the shot of your singer framed by the fence – more of interesting framing please!
• There’s a dodgy edit on the cut to the MCU
• Costuming works well
• Think about using different transitions and also superimposing shots on different video tracks

Filming on 20/10/10

Due to our actress not being able to make it to our scheduled re-film of the shots, we decided to make it easier and film in a local park called Ware Priory on 20/10/10.

The Priory has many scenic routes and woodland pathways which was ideal for the type of filming that we were trying to produce. It was also good weather whilst filming and the sun was reflecting through the trees which complimented our variety of camera angles.

We filmed Georgia running through the trees in high angles and we produced lots of possibilities to create match on action in in some parts. There was also a shot of Georgia's feet running through the Autumn leaves which i think works really well as it gives a sure idea of the mood we are trying to create in our video.

We have booked a camera to take home over the half term and have arranged days to come into school to finish editing our first cut in order to meet our deadline.

Sheduled Filming

Sam is going to take the camera home today (13/10/10) to film his horse running throught the field.

I am then going to take the camera home at the weekend and we will meet in Cheshunt in our chosen locations to re-film our shots that we failed to film previously.

This has slightly delayed our production time, but by next week all of our footage should be captured and we will be editing our first cut.

Filming on the 10/10/10

We scheduled to film a list of shots at the weekend. There was a problem with the camera as it was filming, because there was no playback. We decided to carry on with the filming and hope that it was just the playback that was not working, as the recording was still working as normal.

Once we had finished all of the shots which included the night time scenes and footage for the montage, we called it a day and were happy with what we thought we had filmed.

At school on Wednesday we tried to capture our footage that we had taken, only to find that it hadn't been recorded - which we thought might be the case.

The tape heads inside the camera were dirty which caused it to not capture. If we had known this before we could have cleaned the tape heads and our filming would have been successful.

We have decided to take this as a learning curve for our media skills, and we now know to check to see if the camera films and plays back before we film again.

Capturing our Footage

On Wednesday the 6th of October we captured all the filming we did from the 3rd to look back on all the different shots we did in order to tick off what we have done and to list all the shots we still need to do.

Location Change

We have decided to change the location of our next shot list due to our actor being unavailable at certain times at the weekend.

The new location we will be filming the day and night running shots will be at Cheshunt park and St.Mary's church in Cheshunt.

Multiple shots of Georgia on the bridge
Shots of Georgia lip syncing
Shots of Georgia walking through the woods
Shots of Georgia hiding
Close ups of Georgia's face
Georgia walking towards the camera
Georgia running
Hair flicking
Skirt swaying

Production Schedule

We have produced a Production Schedule to ensure that we don't miss a deadline and to keep on top of what should be done at what date.

How we edited our music

•Downloaded a W.A.V file of the audio track
•Imported the audio file into cubase, into a new project on an audio track
•Worked out the timing of where the song needed to be cut from the original song
•Cut the track into sections and deleted unwanted bars
•Moved uncut sections together and pasted them together using the editing tool
•Faded out the end of the audio track using 'processing' and 'fade out' tools
•Exported the final mix onto Sam's memory stick to import it into Premiere.

Editing the Music for our production

We decied that the song 'The Dog Days are Over' is too long for our production so we asked the head of the music department in our school to help us cut out certain parts of the song.

The lines that are in bold are the chorus' and verses we have decided to cut out:

happiness, hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with a drink
and washed it away down the kitchen sink

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming so you better run

Run fast for your mother run fast for your father
Run for your children and your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your loving behind you
Can’t carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
the dog days are done
Can’t you hear the horsesCuz here they come

And I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you hadand what was left after that too. oh.

Happiness it hurt like a bullet in the mind
Struck from a great height
by someone who should know better than that

The dog days are over
The dog days are gone
can you hear the horses
Cuz here they come

Run fast for your mother and fast for your father
Run for your children for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your loving behind you
Can’t carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are gone
Can you hear the horses because here they come

The dog days are over
The dog days are gone
Can you hear the horses because here they come

This has cut down the song by a significant amount which will make this production easier to complete in the time we have.

Analysis of a professional music video

MASSIVE ATTACK - UNFINISHED SYMPATHY

The video was directed by Baillie Walsh and produced by virgin records. it was filmed in Los Angeles, California, between S.New Hampshire and Dewey Avenue. The lead singer Shara Nelson is featured walking along the sidewalk lip syncing, unaware or uncaring of her surroundings, which includes drunks, gangs and bikers. It was one of the earliest music videos to use one continuous shot with a steadycam operated by Dan Keece.

The song and video was produced in 1991, so the target audience was those who were typical music lovers of the time. The 'Trip-Hop' style genre that Massive Attack invented became notorious during the early 90's, with this song being the most famous. The song and the video is still played on the radio and music television and is still loved by generations after because it is such a classic.

I think the point of the song was not only to draw the attention of the 90's club scene, but the lyrics actually give a powerful message and meaning of love and heartache. Some of my favorite are, 'like a soul without a mind, like a body without a heart, i'm missing every part', i find these very powerful and moving, especially along with the video because it is so real. Shara Nelson lipsyncs as she walks down the Avenue, linking back to the point that she is not phased by her surroundings, and that she cares about nothing other than her lost lover at that point. There is a certain sadness to this song, but in a way it brings people joy because there is an aspect of a powerful woman overcoming what she has to, and moving on because it is desperately needed.

I find the camerawork in this video very interesting as it is done in one continuous shot. being one of the earliest music videos to use this technique, it was an added feature of Massive Attack's breakthrough techniques and quirkyness.
The fascinationg part about this video is that it starts by focusing on a gang members hand, playing with two heavy silver balls - possibly to be used as a weapon in a fight, which make a scratching noise. Then the camera pans and zooms out to the right, facing his dog and then zooms out even further to show his gang and the street. There is a woman walking along the road which the camera then zooms towards, we then realise that this is Shara Nelson and this is who the video is based around. Throughout the course of the shot, the camera moves and jolts to give a sense of the viewer being in the street with her, listening to her and following her on her journey. The camerawork deliberately gives space on the left and right side of Shara, so that it is possible to view the background and the surroundings. The choice of outfit for Shara, which is an all black floating dress down to the floor with long sleeves is done purposely to portray her sadness and depression, and to single her out from the crowd.

The video has received critical acclaim over the years and has become prestigious in the music industry. it has been described as 'A work of art' and has been endlessly admired by the world. So much so that the British band The Verve took inspiration from the video and made their own in exactly the same style for the song 'Bittersweet Symphony' in 1997.

Final Cut - TRAPPED

Feedback on First Cut

Positives:

  • Camera angles were of a good standard.
  • Pace of shots worked nicely, considering the flashforward cuts.
  • Setting, Costumes and Actors are all very fitting with genre.

Negatives:

  • Music and sound effects should be included to add to the emotions we are trying to get across with our film.
  • Change sound levels, as some background sounds were too loud. E.g. Cars passing when character crosses the road.

There was also one other criticism with our film, that one or two particular shots were too long. We considered this issue, but decided not to take action as it would alter the length of our film which we were not willing to do.

Second week of filming + Editing

The flashforwards were what had to be filmed next. This is the footage that appears in a series of alternate cuts while the character is walking home, so we had to think of quick movements and gestures that our character could act, that would make the audience understand the concept.

The filming took place in my shed at the bottom of my garden. We chose the shed because it looks quite doom and gloom, and run down, therefore not a nice place to be staying for a young girl.

As we were filming, it started to rain (again) but this was not a problem as all of the filming was to take place inside the shed fortunately.
All in all we filmed more flashforwards that were intended, but we did this purposely because this way we would have more choice when it came to editing.

When editing the flashforwards into our film, there was a slight issue with the first one, as it came too soon. But we had to do this to avoid a jump cut, so it was a small sacrifice we were willing to make.

All in all, i think our first cut looks appealing and is exactly what i imagined from our plan.

AS Media Foundation Production. Filming week 1 - 22nd Nov '09

On our first day of filming, i gathered some of my friends that were going to be in the film to get ready for production. Then as it got dark we met with megan and Rachael, and headed up to goffs school car park, in Cheshunt.
Outside the school was a good area to film in because plenty of lighting which was beneficial when filming a night time scene. Around this time it was about 5:30pm.

The characters in our film worked really well together and with us. They responded well to what they had to do which was a real help to make the production all round alot better.

We managed to get the first half of the filming done, with not too many stalls in filming. Then By around 6:00pm it started to rain, so we came to a decision to film again on a date in the week.

By this time we had all of the 'journey home' filmed, so all that was left to film was the flashforwards.

Once we got to school with the footage we had so far, we uploaded the film onto the computer and checked to see if any of our shots needed re-filming.
As we expected, all of our shots were fine and we could now start editing and cutting, taking away some footage as it had talking or laughing in it.

Filming and editing so far has been successful, although the software on the computers did repeatedly crash and delete our work, but everyone in the class had this problem. We came to a conclusion that we have to save our work after every significant piece of editing had taken place.

Comments on our animatic

  • Our animatic is a clear representation of the events that occur during our film opening.
  • It is timed correctly, and shows the length our film will hopefully turn out.
  • Although the length does seem long, this is convenient as it gives us more freedom to take out shots and mess around with timings. in our film
  • There is already a sense of suspense when looking at this particular animatic, which is deliberate as our film is a thriller.
  • The sound in the animatic would have been preferred to be taken away, but this is not a major problem.
  • Overall i think our animatic is a successful depiction of the story that is ahead of us.
